"Look for me." A Big book introduction in class I

Class: I

Subject: English

Topic: look for me.  (Big Book)

Introducing a Big Book in the power point s

Information and communication Technology is considered as a key tool for supporting teachers who adopt differentiated instruction, since it gives students with different learning profiles the opportunity to work at the same level, at the same time and through possible peer interaction. The use of ICT tools can actually contribute to differentiate as they are able to promote students’ active role, provide opportunities for changing and modifying teaching and learning approaches.

In this lesson I have used ICT to transfer the story and pictures from the text into a power point slides from the text ‘Look for me’.  Usually when a new text is introduced to the children, teachers use the text but today in place of text I have used the power point slide. It was very convenient for me to take the children through the picture walk and book talk. The children don’t have to struggle to see the pictures and I also don’t have to walk from group to group.

I uploaded this PPT in class I wechat forum on 25th Oct. 2020. As per their remarks, they said that it was an interesting video to watch because they said the lesson was an integration of ICT from the primary level.

So, I should say that integrating ICT in our daily teaching gives an eminence benefits in the teaching learning process. It gives variety of approaches and innovative ways of teaching and learning. With the change in time teachers can no longer rely and restrict on the old traditional methods of teaching we must adopt and accept to change the new ways of teaching and learning process.

Creative writing in class VI English. (Acrostic Poem)

Creating an Acrostic Poem using their names.

Creative writing means writing any articles bases on their experiences and and their interest. it can be something that is creative and can be read by anyone.

We write any articles to:

- remind ourselves.

- for fun.

- relieve our stress.

- cultivate the art of creativity.

- encourage our daily progress in writing.

- write something when bored.

- know ourselves and our lives better and

-keep our mind sharp.

With this basic knowledge introduced in the wechat group, I gave an example of how to create an Acrostic poem as given below.

1. WINTER.

Winter is cold.

It is windy.

Never hot.

There are children playing.

Especially freezing.

Really cold

2. Also I  created an example of an  Acrostic Poem on one of the name of a person.

eg; KUENLEK

Kind

Understanding

Energetic.

Neat

Lively

Excitable.

Keen

After giving this examples I asked them to create and acrostic poem using their names in the class Wechat forum.

some of the examples sent by them are as follows. I assessed  their work and gave them the feedback.

These are some of the few examples of class VI students who created an Acrostic poem using the class wechat as ICT integration in the class.

Reflection.

Generally, teaching lesson using ICT has made more easier means of transferring the lesson to our students. It’s has saved times and resources for both the teachers and learners to deliver the quality lesson to our learners. Technology has made work even more easier to all end users to deliver the work in our own convenient ways.
In this world of digital native, even small kids knows to use the gadgets in their own better ways. They explore the installed apps in the mobile and they learn by themself. It serves a great purpose by integrating all the needs that the learners want at this time.
Yet with some benefits of of ICT, I have seen some of the drawbacks of teaching lesson through ICT. It’s always a negative impacts for some of the learners. Given a time to use it for educational purpose, they misuse it for other gaming and social media purposes.
If I share my teaching of lesson on letter  writing inclass VI, they could write well because they have already studied in class V in the previous year. I couldn’t make a video lesson on how to write an application. This is because keeping in mind on the affordability of data packages by some of the parents living in far flung villages.   I just have a questions on application writing in the class VI wechat group. Next day they all could write an application following all formats needed as per the criteria.
I corrected their work and gave necessary feed  back and remarks on their work. But using a class forum to give feedback couldn’t maintain the overall confidentiality of the individual students. This is because their entire works are seen by all friends and parents in the group chats. Nevertheless the purpose of using ICT lesson in the class is fulfilled

Google class room

Teaching through Google class room is also a challenging work for the teachers. This is because teachers were not well equipped with the use of google classroom software and apps.

Considering this, I attended 2 days online google classroom workshop given by ICT division of Education Ministry, Thimphu. With this knowledge of online workshop, I conducted the SBIP in the school. Most of the teachers were new to this use of online teaching using this apps. All the procedure and steps were followed to create the online teaching using google classroom.

After that we were asked to form or create the google classroom from classes 4 to 6. Followed necessary steps to create and asked student and subjects teachers to join the Google classroom. Invitation were sent and well set for the google classroom.

As I am a class teacher of class VI, I informed the class wechat forum about the creation of Google classroom. Told them about the use of this apps . Even told them about the benefits of this apps. And have a password to all class student to log in the apps.

Upon this creating and asking the invitation some of the students responded me they were not able to create and log in the google classroom. This is because they were more convenient in using wechat. Some of the student were unable do so because most of the times the phones are with their parents. Some parent even don’t have the smart phone to use while some even don’t have a penny to recharge their phone data.  So, looking on this pros and cons, I resolved my class to use wechat as the main means of teaching the student .

Some of the pros and cons of Google classroom apps.

-Student can use write and submit their work using google documents.

-individual work of student were kept as confidential.

- assessment record can be done in time

- can post and create other resources that are needed for student.

- we can know every students participating in the class.

Ever since the school closed on 5th March 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic, teachers all around the country were stranded without any teaching procedure and directives from the ministry. But here at Wangdue, with verbal order and the directives from the CDEO, we were asked to teach through WeChat forum and groups. With this Chinese made Apps, we were made convenient to reach the teaching and learning conductively with our learners.

After a week we made a WeChat forum in every class consisting every subject teacher included in it. Subject to be taught in each day were all mandated and time tabled from the school administration.

As I am teaching classes English in I and VI, some of the evidences are attached herewith.

Their works were all corrected as and when they submit. Proper assessment  and records were kept for future reference to promote student in the next class.

ICT impacts

Technological development and advancement in the west has been very impactful. Due to globalization and changes, the advancement of technology has made its way in the field of learning and education. One of the most important change was seen in classrooms where ICT, Information and Communication Technology has been integrated to make the process of learning quite easy. Integration of ICT in classroom was seen as something revolutionary. Moving from primitive method of teaching to modern way of teaching through integration of ICT was seen as moving from a dark age to light age. However, despite the benefits of ICT in classrooms, there are certain issues and challenges in integrating the ICT in classrooms.

The first and foremost benefit of ICT in learning is that it allows dynamic and cooperative learning among the students. With the access to the Internet, learning is not limited to school hours or in school boundary. Instead it gives the learners opportunity to learn and study wherever and whenever possible.

A rural student can access information of an urban student and share it to a foreign student, be it during the school hours or holidays. With access to the Internet, the dependency of the students on teachers will also be minimal and the student will be able to know when to explore, how to explore and what to explore from the internet. When the students explore the information by themselves, it ensures their attention and concentration on that particular topic or subject, making them well educated in that particular topic and subject.

However, integrating the ICT in classroom is not as easy as it is seen. Due to limited financial aid from the government and the ability to adapt to the modern facilities are the challenges. Making accessible to ICT requires huge financial support because of expensive materials. In Bhutan the cost of internet is very high as well as other electronic equipment are also priced high. The adaptability is also a question, since ICT in general isn’t common in the field of teaching anywhere in the country before.
